OB Expansion: Haywood Regional Medical Center Adds New Doctor and Nurse Midwife

OB Expansion: Haywood Regional Medical Center Adds New Doctor and Nurse Midwife

Both new providers have joined the practice with a strong interest in serving a rural community. OB/GYN physician Jenny Van Winkle, MD, along with her husband and children, decided to move to the mountains of Western North Carolina from Houston for a better quality of life. Van Winkle chose obstetrics because of the long-term relationships one develops with patients. “I like surgery a lot but also wanted to practice preventive care.” You get the best of both worlds in getting to interact with people and knowing them for a long time,” she says. She’s also excited about working with the team as the hospital pursues the designation as a center of excellence for minimally invasive gynecological surgery.   Her special interests and training include prenatal care, contraception, infertility, laparoscopic and vaginal surgery, colposcopy and LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) procedures, PCOS, heavy menstrual bleeding, fibroids, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and menopause.  Dr. Van Winkle is also fluent in Spanish.

Jody Schmit, CNM, the practice’s new nurse midwife, made a similar lifestyle choice in moving to the mountains from the Northeast. In fact, her entire family decided to come with her. "We actually ended up moving here with 15 of our family members,” she says. Schmit wanted to be a midwife since undergraduate nursing school. After her fourth child was born, she went back to graduate school to become a nurse midwife. Today, Schmit cares for patients from the start of the menstrual cycle to post-menopausal. Gynecology patients can come to her for health problems, birth control or preconception counseling, and labor and delivery.

A nurse midwife has a unique role in an OB-GYN practice, not limited to just medical care and counseling on various birth options. Schmit shares, "I am scheduling longer time slots with my patients, which I think is fabulous. I'm grateful because that is what defines midwifery – a focus on patient education and getting to know people."

Today Matthews focuses exclusively on gynecology while Kirk is a seasoned OB/GYN with decades of experience in all areas of OBGYN including patient care, deliveries, and surgery.

Matthews is proud to say, "We have unique skill sets and capabilities,” she says. “We are proud of our focus on minimally invasive surgery, low rate of caesarean deliveries and efforts to minimize labor inductions."
